Why Is 3D More Than Just Movies?

blog | philmckinney | June 2, 2010 at 11:10 am

With the recent rash of movies like Avatar, moviegoers are gaining a new love for everything 3D.  As a result, theaters are enjoying a positive impact to their bottom line.  But 3D isn’t just about the movies.  It has a role in the business world ranging from medical (3D medical imaging), oil and gas (3D geo-spatial) and financial services (3D modeling of markets).  Below is a short video where I share some thoughts on the trends in 3D, the challenges facing the industry and the future impact on our lives.

For those who want more on 3D, watch the “3D Workshop For Filmakers” presented at the Sundance Film Festival.

I don’t think 3D in movies will be a winning technology on a long run. It faces many problems, first and for me most important, our vision system get used to it (it’s our natural way to see). My first contact with this technology was with “Avatar”, good for the first 15 minutes… after I was so concentrated on the visual quality of the film that I forgot it was in 3D! After this esperience I saw many other films in 3D, but I lost the magic and now I look only 2D films. Main problem, I think, is the fact that 3D need to be an immersion esperience and we need, at list, bigger screens that cover totally our angle of viewing (like IMAX screens).

    HI Phil

OMG!!!!! Somebody else gets it! I’ve been working in 3D for over 15 years, using 3D to manage information. It’s been my life’s passion!

We developed, and then sold out, a system for producing as built 3d models of oil platforms, power stations as information portals. 8 years ago!

Platforms such as Unity have now given anyone access to a million different applications, for entertainment, virtual museums, from education to corporate document and knowledge management systems.

The real driving force for this is in Scandinavia at the moment and developmenst are afoot which will kill off the likes of Second Life as the ability to produce propriety and personalised worlds becomes more accessible.

There is now the Perfect storm of technology arriving, the tablet ( both PC and Pad ;-) ). Low polygon modeling, file compression, bandwidth, partial renderin,g that at last deliver what, as a cognitive pyschologist, I’ve been dreaming about since VRML flattered to deceive.

You are on my turf, Phil! Come and play! Please! We need more advocates for this with your profile. Anything you need, just let me know.

This is not so much about the rarified air of the virtual worlds, social networking or gaming but in designing User interfaces. That is the application of 3d where we can change the way people use their PC’s and Macs and mobiles.

    Cheers.

    Dr Barry Bassnett
